Heat distortion is one of those subtle effects that can really make a difference in the realism of a shot. It’s one of those final details you need to make it complete. In real life we see heat distortion at high temperature differences in air or gas, near exhausts, flames, or on the tarmac on a sunny day. This is due to the index of refraction of hot air being slightly lower than the IOR of cold air, this distorts the light passing through.

In this tutorial we will be using a 3D particle system to generate X and Y (red and green) displacement information for a distortion effect applied in the compositor. This effect takes quite a few nodes to set up, but once you’re done, it’s very easy to apply to other projects via a Group Node. At the end of this tutorial, you’ll have your own clean and reusable heat distortion setup!
